ABEEK Strengthens Engineering Education Cooperation in Kazakhstan
The Accreditation Board for Engineering Education of Korea (ABEEK) visited Astana, Kazakhstan, from July 20 to 22, 2026, to advance cooperation in the engineering education accreditation sector. The delegation was led by ABEEK President Wooseung Kim, joined by International Affairs Committee Chair Prof. Youngbok Joo and Director Hyoryong An. The visit was organized in close cooperation with Global Sapa, which played a central role in coordinating the local program and connecting ABEEK with major Kazakhstani education and quality assurance institutions. Through these arrangements, ABEEK held meetings with the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Independent Kazakhstani Accreditation Center (NKCA), NJSC Talap, L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University (ENU), ENU Higher College, and other related organizations. In particular, during a high-level meeting with the Vice-Minister of Science and Higher Education and other senior officials, ABEEK shared Korea’s experience in operating its engineering education accreditation system and exchanged views on how accreditation could support the development of engineering education in Kazakhstan.

A key event of the visit was the three-way MOU ceremony among ABEEK, NKCA, and Global Sapa. The agreement provided a formal starting point for continued cooperation on accreditation, quality assurance, and educational development between Korea and Kazakhstan. The meetings also moved beyond general institutional exchange by addressing how accreditation could be applied in Kazakhstan’s own educational context. Discussions covered the role of accreditation in reviewing program quality, connecting educational outcomes with practical training, and helping institutions build improvement systems that reflect both international standards and local workforce needs. At ENU, one of Kazakhstan’s major national universities, ABEEK delegation and ENU leadership discussed the possibility of pursuing ABEEK accreditation as part of broader efforts to enhance the quality and global relevance of its engineering education programs.

The visit also highlighted Kazakhstan’s active interest in learning from Korea’s experience in outcomes-based engineering education. The discussions showed that Kazakhstan is looking at accreditation not simply as an evaluation process, but as a way to modernize engineering education and make programs more responsive to real-world needs. Building on the results of the visit, ABEEK plans to continue dialogue with Kazakhstani partners and seek practical forms of cooperation that can lead to concrete follow-up projects between institutions in both countries.
