ABEEK’s IEAM 2026 Participation Reinforces Korea’s Role in Global Engineering Education

From June 7 to 12, The Accreditation Board for Engineering Education of Korea (ABEEK) participated in the International Engineering Alliance Meetings (IEAM) 2026, held in Cape Town, South Africa, to exchange views with international partners on the future of engineering education and accreditation. Marking its 20th year of participation as a full signatory of the Washington Accord, ABEEK continued to represent Korea’s voice in global accreditation cooperation.

ABEEK's delegation consisted of President Prof. Wooseung Kim, Senior Vice President Prof. Sungjo Hong, International Affairs Committee Vice Chair Prof. Youngbok Joo, and Director Hyoryong An.

During the meetings, ABEEK representatives joined discussions on the future direction of the IEA, including improvements to review procedures, international mobility, and the practical application of substantial equivalence. ABEEK also gave a presentation on the potential collaboration between the Washington Accord and global university evaluation frameworks such as QS, introducing ways to better communicate the value of outcomes-based accreditation to students, universities, industry, and the wider public.

A major outcome for ABEEK was the unanimous extension of its full signatory status under the Washington Accord for another six years, reaffirming the international credibility of Korea’s engineering education accreditation system. This decision means that ABEEK-accredited programs will continue to be recognized within the Washington Accord framework as programs that prepare graduates at an internationally accepted level. For students and graduates, this recognition serves as meaningful evidence of their academic background when pursuing overseas study, global career opportunities, and professional qualification pathways.

ABEEK will continue working with universities, industry, and international partners to strengthen the credibility of engineering accreditation in Korea and support the global mobility of Korean engineering talent.
